Trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER)

endothelial cells forming barrier tissue [2]

Organ-on-Chip systems are promising drug development instruments for the pharmaceutical industry, which mimic organs such as the gut, lung or blood-brain-barrier. An Organ-on-Chip is a device in which human tissues are cultured in a controlled microfluidic environment [2].

Trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER) measurements are a widely used method to determine the quality of the barrier function of epithelial and endothelial cell monolayers [1]. The value of the TEER measurement gives an indication of the tightness of the a cellular barrier in vitro [2]. With the Boxense, the measurements can be performed real-time, non-destructive and label-free.
